Spanish River is 0-10 against Wellington since February of 2015 but things could change on Wednesday. The Spanish River Sharks will face off against the Wellington Wolverines at 6:00 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Spanish River is headed out to face Wellington after opening their season at home and giving their fans just what they were looking for. Spanish River had just enough and edged out West Broward 2-1 on Friday.
Giselle Portanova spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on four hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, Spanish River saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Riley Ready, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI. Those two RBI gave Ready a new career-high.
Meanwhile, Wellington had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They blew past Forest Hill 17-0 on Wednesday.
Tori Payne made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Payne was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Kaylee Riles and Jessilyn Vera did most of the damage at the plate: Riles went a perfect 2-for-2 with two triples, two RBI, and one run, while Vera went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. Brianna Casey was another key player, scoring two runs while going 1-for-1.
Wellington hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in five consecutive matches dating back to last season.
Spanish River came up short against Wellington in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, falling 6-2. Can Spanish River avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
