The storied Gilman lacrosse program — which captured this season’s Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title — capped its 2009 championship season by having a game-record five players invited to participate in the fourth annual Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic.
Jack Doyle (midfield, will attend Harvard), Davey Emala (attack, Georgetown), Marcus Holman (attack, North Carolina), Greg McBride (midfield, North Carolina) and Harry Prevas (defense, Virginia) all received invitations to play on the South squad in the prestigious game, which was held Saturday at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the Towson University campus, ironically where Gilman captured its conference title.

The South squad entered the contest with losses in the previous three games, but behind Holman’s goal and assist during a four-goal, fourth-quarter scoring run, the South came away with a 19-16 win.
"People may say it's just another game, but whenever you set foot on the field, you want to win," Holman told the Baltimore Sun.
Holman finished with three goals and two assists, while Brian Casey (Georgetown Prep, attack, Georgetown) scored a game-high four goals and Patrick Fanshaw (Calvert Hall, attack, Loyola) added two.
Chris LaPierre (Shawnee, N.J.) captured game Most Valuable Player honors scoring two goals and dishing off a game-record four assists.
The game, which was witnessed by 2,364 spectators, featured 44 of the nation’s top seniors from 13 states and Washington, D.C.
Other Maryland/D.C. players participating included Pat Cotter (Georgetown Prep, midfield, Notre Dame), Roger Ferguson (St. Alban’s, defense, Brown), John Kemp (Georgetown Prep, goalie, Notre Dame) and Chris Lightner (Calvert Hall, defense, Johns Hopkins).
Kevin Gilbin, a 21-year veteran who led Georgetown Prep to the IAC title this past spring and has won five league titles in his career, was the head coach for the South team.
“It is always an honor to coach these kids, and I’m really looking forward to watching them in college,” Gilbin said.
South girls fall to North
The North squad — comprised of players from Pennsylvania and states north — scored seven of eight goals during a 13-minute span in the second half to come away with a 12-9 victory over the South at the Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic.
Molly Fernandez, Kitty Cullen, Erin Laschinger, Brittany Dashiell, Katie Schwarzmann, Ashley Bruns and Kelsi Bozel scored one goal each for the South squad.
The win was the North’s third in the four-year history of the game, which was played prior to the boys’ contest at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Hebron, attack, Florida), Kitty Cullen (McDonogh, midfield, Florida), Brittany Dashiell (John Carroll, attack, Florida), Sam Farrell (Severna Park, midfield, Florida), Molly Fernandez (McDonogh, attack, Penn State), Ashley Hunter (St. Stephen’s St. Agnes, defense, Georgetown), Haydon Judge (St. Mary’s, defense, Florida), Danielle Kirk (Archbishop Spalding, midfield, Maryland), Kim Kolarik (South River, goalie, Virginia), Cosette Larash (Archbishop Spalding, goalie, Johns Hopkins), Erin Laschinger (Notre Dame Prep, midfield, Virginia), Katie Matz (McDonogh, attack, Princeton), Sarah Matz (Bryn Mawr, midfield, Maryland), Colby Rhea (McDonogh, midfield, Florida), Maddie Salamone (Bel Air, midfield, Duke), Iliana Sanza (St. Paul’s, defense, Maryland), Katie Schwarzmann (Century, midfield, Maryland) and Annie Thomas (Bryn Mawr, midfield, Virginia).
Severna Park’s Carin Peterson was the head coach for the South team. Peterson has led Severna Park to eight state titles in her 21 years, including the last three at the 3A/4A level.
Under Armour Underclassmen Tournament: Baltimore girls win title
The girls all-star lacrosse team from Baltimore — made up of 25 of the top underclassmen from both public and private schools in the Baltimore area — entered Sunday’s championship game of the Under Armour All-America Underclassmen Tournament with a perfect weekend record.
And when the horn sounded at the end of the final game, Baltimore’s perfect record was still intact as it came away with a hard-fought 15-12 win over a team from Long Island to win the championship.
Notre Dame Prep’s Covie Stanwick earned MVP honors by scoring three of her four goals in the first half to enable Baltimore to jump out to a 9-5 lead.
Long Island would fight back to within one goal on two separate occasions in the second half, but Baltimore answered when Hannah Franklin (McDonogh) scored two of her three goals to give her team back a two-goal cushion on the way to the win.
Amalie Trentzsch and Mackenzie Cry, both from Winters Mill, scored two goals each as did Notre Dame Prep’s Sydney Peterson.
