The Newport Greyhounds are taking a road trip to face off against the Rivercrest Colts at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Newport took a loss when they played away from home on September 12th, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They blew past Piggott 59-6. That 53 point margin sets a new team best for the Greyhounds this season.
Newport got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Trevion Greer out in front who rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns on only nine carries. Greer's longest rush was for an impressive 52 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Luke Reynolds was another major influence, as he rushed for 58 yards and ran in a TD.
Meanwhile, Rivercrest was fully in charge on Friday, breezing past Harrisburg 54-20. The Colts pushed the score to 54-14 by the end of the third, a deficit the Hornets cut but never quite recovered from.
Newport better keep an eye on Jayden Young. He was instrumental in Rivercrest's win, picking up 99 receiving yards and a pair of scores, while also rushing for 46 yards and two TDs. Young didn't just play on offense: he also forced one fumble and made seven total tackles (1.0 for loss) in addition to snagging an interception. Tekylun Sanders also helped out with an impressive 155 receiving yards.
Rivercrest didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Jamaris Byrd and Young.
The victory got Rivercrest back to even at 2-2. As for Newport, their record now sits at 3-1.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Newport has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 260.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Rivercrest struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 217 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Newport came up short against Rivercrest when the teams last played back in October of 2024, falling 48-44. Thankfully for the Greyhounds, Cavonta Washington (who rushed for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 14 carries, and also threw for 254 yards and two TDs while completing 71.4% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
