III Section I recap Oct. 23, 2012
Williams Field extended the longest winning streak in III Section I this week by beating Poston Butte, 32-29. The victory was the ninth in a row for the team.
Nogales took down Cholla 56-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Brian McCarty ran for 72 yards and caught three passes for 60 yards in the win.
Robert Herrera threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns. He was 12-20 with zero interceptions.
KENTRELL COLEMAN was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 262 yards on 27 carries as Maricopa beat the Broncos. CALEB BUCK also contributed to the rushing game with 39 yards on the ground.
Nick Elliott provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Casa Grande lost to Higley. He completed 15 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 169 yards. Elliott's favorite target this week was Stephen Mendicino, who caught eight passes for 123 yards.
Johnson was the best wideout in the league this week as Steve Campbell's team topped Poston Butte. Johnson racked up 13 receptions for 163 yards. Brady Alexander helped Williams Field's passing attack out by catching five balls for 78 yards.
Byron Bourgogne made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Knights beat the Cougars. The 5-foot-11 senior grabbed one sack.
Thanks to the talents of Carson Jones and Matt Guida Queen Creek has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Jones leads the league in passing with 1461 yards, while Guida has rushed for 1744 yards this season. Sabino's Matt Bushman leads the league in receiving yards with 831 on 31 catches.
Casa Grande's Elliott needs only one yards against Coolidge next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Elliott has rushed for 999 yards on 161 carries so far this year.
A big matchup in III Section I this week will be when the Bulldogs take on the Black Hawks. As it stands, Queen Creek is in fourth, while Williams Field is in first.
Vista Grande made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 10,142 from 11,161. The improvement was the result of 49-0 victory over Rio Rico last week.
