The Port Byron Panthers will face off against the Weedsport Wolverines at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Monday just wasn't the day for Port Byron's offense. They fell just short of Central by a score of 2-0 on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Panthers have suffered since May 20, 2024.
Port Byron saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alex Laframboise, who went 1-for-3 with one double.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Wednesday Weedsport sidestepped Jordan-Elbridge for a 7-5 win. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wolverines have posted against the Eagles since April 1, 2019.
Nico Giacolone made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Weedsport is undefeated when he allows at most one walk, but 3-4 otherwise. Giacolone was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Weedsport has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-4 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Port Byron, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Port Byron has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Weedsport struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Port Byron came up short against Weedsport in their previous meeting two weeks ago, falling 7-4. Will the Panthers have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
