The Lutheran Lions waltzed into their contest on Saturday with seven straight wins but they left with eight. They walked away with a 61-54 victory over Severance. Given Lutheran's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 13th, while Severance is ranked 90th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Hunter Caldwell was his usual excellent self, shooting 5-for-8 from deep and dropping a double-double on 23 points and ten rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kade Speckman, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and three blocks.
When it comes to explaining why Severance lost, one person who can't be blamed is Brady Varney. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds. Another player making a difference was Blake Varney, who scored 12 points along with two steals.
Lutheran's victory bumped their record up to 8-2. As for Severance, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.
Lutheran will be playing in front of their home fans against D'Evelyn at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Taj Kumar and Braydon Jacob. As for Severance, they will head out on the road to challenge Skyline at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Skyline's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season.
