Baseball Recap: Ayer Shirley Takes a Loss

Ayer Shirley dropped their record down to 3-7 on Wednesday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They lost 10-0 to the Maynard Tigers. The match marked the first time this season in which the Panthers were not able to get on the board.

As for Maynard, their record is now 9-2. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for their hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

For Maynard's part, Max Mandler made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Mandler has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.

In other batting news, Maynard got a massive performance out of Thomas Lawton, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave Lawton a new career-high. Liam Lawton also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Ayer Shirley will head out to face off against Bromfield at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. As for Maynard, they will venture away from home to challenge West Boylston at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The last three games the Lions have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
