5A Region 4 recap Oct. 9, 2012
Picayune extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region 4 this week by beating Pascagoula, 49-10. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.
Pearl River Central led the league in scoring this week after putting up 56 points on West Harrison. Dylan Spiers threw for 149 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
The Panthers' dynamic duo of Stacey Warren and Breland Hoye proved tough for Picayune to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Warren threw for 163 yards and 14 touchdowns and Hoye had 106 yards receiving. Jalen Smith helped Pascagoula's passing attack out by catching one ball for 49 yards.
Doug Cross was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 230 yards on 24 carries as the Maroon Tide fell to the Maroon Tide. Teammate Desmond Taylor added to the ground attack by rushing for 103 yards.
Hunter Hanson made the biggest impact on defense this week as East Central fell to Gautier. The junior recorded one fumble and racked up 1.0 sack.
Long Beach's Thad Miller and Chad Cook have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 5A Region 4 in both passing and receiving yards. Miller has thrown for 493 yards this season, while Cook, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 14 catches for 293 yards. Preston Dedeaux from Picayune leads the league in rushing with 747 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Maroon Tide take on Moss Point. As it stands, Picayune is in first, while the Tigers are in fourth.
