On Thursday, The Covington-Douglas Wildcats faced the Okeene Whippets in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Covington-Douglas sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 46-44 win over Okeene. The win was just what Covington-Douglas needed coming off of a 48-0 defeat in their prior contest.
Ford Smith had a dynamite game for Covington-Douglas, rushing for 251 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 7.6 yards per carry, and also throwing for 165 yards and a touchdown. Smith was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 53 yards. Another player making a difference was Miguel Tarango, who gained 139 total yards and a touchdown.
When it comes to explaining why Okeene lost, one person who can't be blamed is Luke Swartwood. Despite the final result, he rushed for 156 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 8.2 yards per carry.
Covington-Douglas' victory bumped their record up to 8-2. As for Okeene, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-3.
Covington-Douglas will head out on the road to face off against Velma-Alma at 7:00 p.m. on November 10th. Velma-Alma has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 420 points over their last eight contests. As for Okeene, they will be playing at home against Cyril at 7:00 p.m. on November 10th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Oklahoma (Cyril is ranked 34th, while Okeene is ranked 12th).
