The Hawken Hawks will look to defend their home court on Monday against the Western Reserve Academy Pioneers at 5:30 p.m. The timing isn't great for Hawken: they have been struggling with five straight losses at home, while Western Reserve Academy has snatched up four consecutive wins on the road.
On Saturday, Hawken strolled past Andrews Osborne Academy with points to spare, taking the game 48-30. That looming 48-30 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Hawken yet this season.
Hawken can attribute much of their success to Sarah Liu, who scored eight points along with seven rebounds and seven steals, and Julia Scales, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. That makes it ten consecutive games in which Scales has scored at least a third of Hawken's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Austin Fritzgerald, who scored five points along with ten rebounds.
Meanwhile, Western Reserve Academy fought the good fight in their overtime game against George Rogers Clark on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 72-60 to the Cardinals. While losing is never fun, Western Reserve Academy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 44th in Ohio, while George Rogers Clark is ranked first in Kentucky).
Despite the defeat, Western Reserve Academy got a solid performance out of Maya Nahar, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Nahar has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Brooklyn Hall, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Hawken's victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 2-10. As for Western Reserve Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-4.
Hawken came up short against Western Reserve Academy when the teams last played back in December of 2019, falling 46-34. Can Hawken avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
