Riverside hasn't had much luck against Covington recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Pirates are taking a road trip to square off against the Buccaneers at 5:00 p.m. Riverside is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.9 runs per game this season.
Riverside came into their game on Tuesday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They lost 9-1 to Miami East. The contest marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.
Riverside saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Emilee Robinson, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, Covington had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.2 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Tuesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Cavaliers a 24-0 shutout. Considering the Buccaneers have won 11 games by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Jayda McClure made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over five innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with five runs, five RBI, and one triple. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Emalyn Johnson was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and one triple. Karlee Schwartz was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Covington kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in nine consecutive matchups.
Riverside's loss dropped their record down to 8-8. As for Covington, their record is now 13-2.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Riverside hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Covington struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.1 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Riverside might still be hurting after the 14-3 defeat they got from Covington in their previous meeting on Thursday. Can the Pirates avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
