Sacred Heart Academy had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-7 win over the Nardin Academy Gators on Monday. The game was the first time the Sharks have beaten the Gators on their field since May 16, 2023.
Emma Popp made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. Popp was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-5.
In other batting news, Sacred Heart Academy let Maggie Degnan and Emily Fronczak run wild. Degnan scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3, while Fronczak went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one stolen base, and two RBI. Rose Ciocca was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sacred Heart Academy will challenge Oneida at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. As for Nardin Academy, they will square off against St. Mary's at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
