Softball Recap: Phoenix Avey Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Copper Canyon

While Sunrise Mountain didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-19-1), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Copper Canyon Aztecs a 15-0 shutout on Thursday. Considering the Mustangs have won six matches by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Sunrise Mountain got a massive performance out of Phoenix Avey, who scored two runs while going 3-for-3. Those three hits gave Avey a new career-high. Anisa Garcia was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3.

Avey wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Sunrise Mountain kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive games.

Sunrise Mountain's record now sits at 7-4. As for Copper Canyon, their loss was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-5.

Coincidentally, Sunrise Mountain and Copper Canyon will both be playing Maricopa the next time they take the field. Sunrise Mountain will head out to face Maricopa at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, while Copper Canyon will head out to face them at 12:00 p.m. on Friday.
