It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but the Highland Hornets ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They escaped with a win against West Mesa by the margin of a single free throw, 56-55. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
It was another big night for Jesus Licon, who scored 31 points along with six rebounds. The matchup was his 11th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Raul Stanford, who scored seven points along with eight rebounds and five assists.
The win was the third in a row for Highland, bringing their record for this year to 9-2. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of four points across that stretch. As for West Mesa, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-3.
Highland will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Hobbs at 5:30 p.m. Hobbs is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak. As for West Mesa, they will head out on the road to face off against Cibola at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Cibola will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps New Mexico Rankings (they are ranked 63rd, while West Mesa is ranked 19th).
