Mendon and Colon are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2016, but not for long. The Mendon Hornets will head out on the road to face off against the Colon Magi at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Mendon is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
Last Wednesday, Mendon earned a 60-47 victory over Burr Oak.
Mendon's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Owen Gorham led the charge by scoring 20 points along with nine rebounds and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gorham has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Quincy Blair, who scored 17 points along with two blocks.
Meanwhile, Colon's 18-8 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They fell to Jackson Christian 44-40. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Colon has scored all season.
Despite the loss, Colon had strong showings from Dalton Williams, who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks, and Nic Mock, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Williams pulled down eight or more rebounds.
Mendon's victory bumped their record up to 5-6. As for Colon, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-5.
Keep an eye on the arc in Friday's contest: Mendon have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 4.9 threes per game. It's a different story for Colon, though, as they've been averaging only 4.6 threes per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Mendon didn't have too much breathing room in their match against Colon in their previous matchup back in November of 2023, but they still walked away with a 55-50 win. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Williams, who scored 22 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Mendon still be able to contain him? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
