Perry (Gilbert, Ariz.) took an early lead against
O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz.) and held on for a 21-7 victory on Saturday.
The Pumas scored seven points in the first quarter. Perry scored on a touchdown run.
After taking the lead on a rushing touchdown in the first quarter, PHS led 14-7 at the half.
The Gilbert school expanded its lead to 14 points entering the fourth quarter. The Pumas scored once in the quarter on an
Austin Nightingale touchdown pass to
Alec Monte.
O'Connor's only touchdown came on a run in the second quarter.
The victory was a step in the right direction for Perry, which was coming off a 20-17 defeat at the hands of Sunnyside in its previous game. The defeat comes as a step back for O'Connor, who notched a 42-6 victory over Maryvale in its previous outing.
In a non-conference game next week Perry (1-1) takes on Gila Ridge, and O'Connor (1-1) will go up against Desert Ridge also in a non-conference game.
