Volleyball Game Preview: Montello Hilltoppers vs. Wautoma Hornets

Montello is 0-6 against Wautoma since September of 2016 but things could change on Wednesday. The Hilltoppers will take on the Hornets at 1:30 p.m. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a three-game winning streak alive.

Montello barely beat Markesan the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Hilltoppers put the hurt on the Hornets with a sharp 3-0 victory on Tuesday.

The 3-0 score doesn't show just how dominant Montello was: they took every set by at least 15 points. The final score came out to 25-3, 25-8, 25-10.

Montello relied on the efforts of Rylan Harder, who had seven digs and three aces, and Kyla Calnin, who had five digs and three aces. That's the most digs Calnin has posted over her last six contests.

They weren't the only good server: Montello was lethal from the service line and finished the game with 16 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least five aces in ten consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Wautoma sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 win over Mishicot on Saturday.

The victory got Wautoma back to even at 7-7. As for Montello, their record now sits at 13-4.

Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Wednesday's match: Montello has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 8.5 aces per game. However, it's not like Wautoma struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.6 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Montello couldn't quite get it done against Wautoma in their previous matchup back in September of 2024 as they fell 2-0. Can the Hilltoppers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
