Westview is 2-8 against Lakeland since December of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Westview Warriors are taking a road trip to square off against the Lakeland Lakers at 6:00 p.m.
Last Saturday, Westview came up short against Central Noble and fell 46-33. While losing is never fun, the Warriors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 241st, while the Cougars are ranked 116th).
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Janissa Lehman, who posted ten points. Olivia Bontrager was another key player, putting up five points.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Lakeland). They blew past Bethany Christian, posting a 58-21 win. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Lakers as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.
Lakeland's win came from a few key players Westview will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Dulce Canedo, who went 6 of 9 on her way to 17 points along with five boards and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Zoey Bowman, who put up 13 points in addition to seven assists and seven boards.
Lakeland was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in four consecutive matches.
Lakeland's win bumped their record up to 3-7. As for Westview, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 6-6.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Westview has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 23.8 boards per game. However, it's not like Lakeland struggles in that department as they've been averaging 28.2 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Westview couldn't quite finish off Lakeland when the teams last played back in January and fell 37-34. Can Westview avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
