MaxPreps Midwest Top 25 high school boys basketball rankings

Muskegon High's boys basketball team, the only major unbeaten in the Midwest, has officially moved to the No. 1 spot in the Midwest Rankings and seven new teams have entered as well.


1. (Last week No. 2) Muskegon (Mich.), 25-0
The Big Reds won the Class A regional crown with a 56-48 victory over Hudsonville before a full house and took over the No. 1 ranking in the Midwest. Deshaun Thrower led the way with 28 points. In the semifinals they crushed Northview (Grand Rapids) 74-31 as junior Joeviar Kennedy scored 22 points.
Next: Tuesday vs. Skyline (Ann Arbor) in the Class A state quarterfinals at Lansing Eastern.

2. (3) Indianapolis Arsenal Technical, 25-2
The Titans defeated Pike (Indianapolis) 60-52 to win the Class 4A regional - their first regional crown since 1978. Trey Lyles set the pace with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Mike Jones also scored 19 points. Jeremie Tyler scored 23 points during an 80-55 semifinal victory over Richmond.
Next: Saturday vs. Bloomington North in the Class 4A semi-state at Richmond.

3. (4) Stevenson (Lincolnshire, Ill.), 30-1
The Patriots defeated previously unbeaten Fremd (Palatine) 68-48 to win the Class 4A sectional crown. Jalen Brunson had 27 points and four steals, while Connor Cashaw had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Brunson scored 34 points, including six consecutive 3-pointers, during an 84-73 semifinal win against St. Viator (Arlington Heights) before a capacity crowd.
Next: Tuesday vs. Auburn (Rockford) in the Class 4A super-sectional at Northern Illinois University.

4. (5) St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio), 24-2
The Eagles earned a Division I regional crown with a 74-47 rout of Mansfield as Tony Vuyancih scored 19 points. They shot 54 percent during a 70-59 victory against St. Ignatius (Cleveland) behind 16 points by Malcolm Walters in the semifinals. They also received good news when 6-foot-9 sophomore Derek Funderburk returned from a broken foot and was able to play five minutes.
Next: Friday vs. East Tech (Cleveland) in the Division I state semifinals at Ohio State University.

5. (6) Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights, Ill.), 28-2
University of Kentucky recruit Tyler Ulis had 25 points and six assists as the Spartans won the Class 4A sectional with a 71-60 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor (Homewood). In the semifinals he exploded for 40 points (7 of 10 from 3-point range) to spark a 66-45 victory over Bloom Township (Chicago Heights).
Next: Tuesday vs. No. 24 Edwardsville in the Class 4A super-sectional at Illinois State University.

6. (7) La Lumiere (LaPorte, Ind.), 23-2
The Lakers are idle until April 3 when they will play St. Joseph Prep (Huntington, W.Va.) in the first round of Dick's Sporting Goods High School National Tournament at Christ the King in Queens, N.Y.

7. (8) Whitney Young (Chicago), 26-5
The Dolphins defeated St. Rita (Chicago) 75-66 behind Jahlil Okafor (35 points, 13 rebounds) to win the Class 4A sectional. Okafor had 19 points and 11 rebounds as they eliminated four-time defending state champion Simeon (Chicago) 72-64 in the semifinals.
Next: Tuesday vs. Loyola (Wilmette) in the Class 4A super-sectional at Chicago State University.

8. (12) Greensburg (Ind.), 26-1
The Pirates rolled past Memorial (Evansville) 73-50 for their 13th-straight victory and the Class 3A regional crown. Sean Sellers was the leader with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Ryan Welage added 22 points. Sellers had 20 points and 10 rebounds during a 70-60 semifinal win against Silver Creek (Sellersburg).
Next: Saturday vs. Guerin Catholic (Noblesville) in the Class 3A semi-state at Richmond.

*9. (18) Germantown (Wis.), 26-2
The Warhawks dealt Neenah its second loss, 48-42, to notch their third-consecutive Division I state championship as LaMonte Bearden Jr. and Brian Bearden each scored 13 points. In the semifinals they defeated then No. 9-ranked King (Milwaukee) 77-60 with 59 percent shooting. Evan Wesenberg drilled 11 of 13 shots and finished with 25 points, while LaMonte Bearden added 17 points.

10. (21) Lincoln (Ill.), 32-2
The Railsplitters avenged one of their two losses, ran their winning streak to 18 games and won the Class 3A sectional with a 47-30 victory over Champaign Central. Max Cook was the pacesetter with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Edward Bowlby scored 15 points during a 48-29 semifinal win against Glenwood (Chatham).
Next: Tuesday vs. Cahokia in the Class 3A super-sectional at Springfield.

11. (13) Hickman (Columbia, Mo.), 26-2
The Kewpies overcame a 40-point explosion by 6-5 Missouri State recruit Chris Kendrix to edge Willard 57-54 in the Class 5 state quarterfinals. Junior Jimmy Whitt led the winners with 25 points. They dealt Waynesville its third loss, 46-45 in the semifinals, behind 20 points by Chris Clark.
Next: Thursday vs. Hazelwood Central (Florissant) in the Class 5 state semifinals.

12. (23) Trotwood-Madison (Trotwood, Ohio), 25-2
The Rams shocked then No. 1-ranked Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) 62-61 before a crowd of 3,500 to win the Division I regional. Senior guard Chris Mack drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the circle with 2.3 seconds left for the winning basket - and their only lead of the game. Dezhontae Bennett was high with 22 points and Mack added 13.

13. (17) Mt. Clemens (Mich.), 24-1
The Battling Bathers routed Bishop Foley (Madison Heights) 81-49 to win the Class C regional. Devonte Bandoo had 19 points, while Charles Penn II had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jason Watts II had 14 points and 10 rebounds during a 75-39 semifinal rout of Marlette.
Next: Tuesday vs. No. 22 Consortium (Detroit) in the Class C state quarterfinals at West Bloomfield.

*14. (NR) DeLaSalle (Minneapolis), 26-3
The Islanders - featuring five Division I or Division II players - defeated Austin 60-40 to win their third-consecutive Class 3A state championship. Stanford recruit Reid Travis (6-8, 220) shot 8-for-9 from the field for a team-high 16 points to help the Islanders finish with a 22-game winning streak.

15. (NR) Upper Arlington (Columbus, Ohio), 26-1
The Golden Bears earned their first Final Four trip since 1937 by winning the Division I regional with a 50-36 victory over Northland (Columbus). Senior guard Kevin Vannatta (6-1, 190) put on a show for the estimated crowd of 4,000 with 27 points (14 of 16 free throws), 19 rebounds and four assists.

16. (NR) Lake Central (St. John, Ind.), 21-3
The Indians nipped then-No. 16 Penn (Mishawaka) 57-55 on a tip-in by 6-7 Butler University recruit Tyler Wideman with three seconds left to win the Class 4A regional - their first regional title since 1984. He finished with 16 points and scored 15 during a 70-60 semifinal victory over La Porte.
Next: Saturday vs. Homestead (Fort Wayne) in the Class 4A semi-state at Lafayette Jefferson.

17. (1) Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati), 24-2, season complete
The Crusaders, once leading by 16 points, were stunned by then-No. 23 Trotwood-Madison (Trotwood) 62-61 on a 3-point basket with three seconds left in the Division I regional title game. They had a 45-29 rebounding advantage, but committed 22 turnovers to just seven for the victorious Rams. Jack Anton stood out with 21 points and 14 rebounds, while junior Nate Fowler contributed 12 points and 15 rebounds. They raised their winning streak to 18 games in the semifinals with a 53-50 win against Middletown as Grant Benzinger scored 24 points.

*18. (NR) Lakeville North (Minn.), 27-5
The Panthers won their first Class 4A state title with an 84-82 upset of then-No. 15 Hopkins (Minnetonka) before a crowd of 11,000. They scored the game's last six points over the final 36 seconds to close the season with a seven-game winning streak. Xavier University recruit J.P. Macura exploded for 43 points - five fewer than the 6-5 senior amassed during a regular-season 89-84 loss to Hopkins. Hopkins had won its previous 25 games. During the semifinals the Panthers edged Cretin Derham-Hall (St. Paul) 55-52 as Connor Flack totaled 13 points and 12 rebounds.

19. (19) Apple Valley (Minn.), 27-2, season complete

*20. (20) Blue Valley Northwest (Overland Park, Kan.), 23-2
The Huskies repeated as Class 6A state champions with a 73-46 rout of Blue Valley North as Iowa State recruit Clayton Custer shot 9-for-12 from the field and scored 25 points. Custer scored 20 points during a 61-42 victory over Maize in the semifinals and had 17 points to go with 11 rebounds in a 65-44 quarterfinal win against Wichita North.

*21. (NR) Iowa City West (Iowa), 23-3
The Trojans defeated Valley (West Des Moines) 57-45 to win the Class 4A state title and become the first Iowa team to claim three consecutive titles since Davenport from 1950-52. They shot 51 percent from the field with four players scoring 13 points apiece. Chike Ukah dominated the boards with 13 rebounds. Wyatt Lohaus scored 16 points during a 49-46 semifinal victory over Bettendorf and 22 during a 69-51 quarterfinal win against Southeast Polk (Pleasant Hill).

22. (22) Consortium College Prep (Detroit), 22-2
Joshua Jackson amassed 28 points, 15 rebounds and six assists as the Cougars won the Class C regional with a 91-61 rout of Whiteford (Ottawa Lakes). He also had 16 points and 15 rebounds during a 64-48 semifinal victory over Allen Academy (Detroit).

23. (10) Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers, Ind.), 23-4, season complete
The Royals were upset by Homestead (Fort Wayne) 59-57 during the Class 4A regional finals. Eric Davidson scored 15 points and he had 22 during a 59-55 semifinal victory over previously once-beaten North (Fort Wayne).

24. (NR) Edwardsville (Ill.), 29-2
The Tigers edged Normal Community 56-53 to win the Class 4A sectional crown as Darian Brown scored 19 points and Armon Fletcher 15. Shawn Roundtree scored 18 points during a 47-40 semifinal victory over Belleville East.

*25. (NR) Fargo Davies (N.D.), 22-3
The Eagles soared to their first Class A state title in their fourth year of existence with a 62-55 victory over St. Mary's Central (Bismarck). Tanner Kretchman, a 5-11 senior guard, had 32 points, six rebounds and five assists to earn MVP honors. Kretchman scored 31 points during an 82-66 semifinal victory over Fargo South.
