MONROE, N.C. -
Union Academy (Monroe, N.C.) jumped out to an early lead against West Columbus (Cerro Gordo, N.C.) and never looked back on the way to a 56-6 victory on Saturday.
The Cardinals scored 21 points in the first quarter. Union Academy scored on a touchdown run by
Rasheed Rushing, a defensive touchdown and a kick return touchdown by
Maliq Pando.
UA was up 42-6 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown run by Rushing in the first quarter.
The Monroe school expanded its lead to 43 points entering the fourth quarter. The Cardinals scored once in the quarter on a
Aaron Mack touchdown pass to Rushing.
Union Academy's most effective player was Rushing. The senior running back ran for two touchdowns and caught one touchdown. He has now scored 20 touchdowns on the season.
The Vikings' lone touchdown came on a run in the first quarter.
Coming into the game UA had allowed 27.9 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding West Columbus well below its season average of 17.5 points scored per game.
