Baseball Recap: Damon Abate's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Naugatuck over Holy Cross

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Thursday as neither Naugatuck nor Holy Cross made it on the board until the sixth inning. The Greyhounds wound up with the same score they had in their last game (3-2), but sadly the team found themselves on the wrong side of the score this time. They were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Crusaders earlier this season, when they won 3-2.

Lucas Ferraiolo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on five hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Naugatuck saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Damon Abate, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base. Abate is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

Naugatuck has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 15-8 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Holy Cross, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-6 record this season.
