Basketball Game Preview: Mercer Island Islanders vs. Lake Washington Kangaroos

Mercer Island is 0-10 against Lake Washington since January of 2020 but things could change on Wednesday. The Mercer Island Islanders will head out to challenge the Lake Washington Kangaroos at 6:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Mercer Island took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They snuck past Issaquah with a 60-56 victory. The win was all the more spectacular given the Islanders' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Washington basketball rankings (they are ranked 151st, while the Eagles are ranked 17th).

Mercer Island's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Elianna Weiss led the charge by going 6 for 12 en route to 21 points. That's the most points Weiss has posted since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Anna Mock, who posted nine points and three steals.

Meanwhile, Lake Washington waltzed into their game on Monday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They came out on top against the Spartans by a score of 58-47. 58 seems to be a good number for the Kangaroos as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of points in their previous game.

Lake Washington's win bumped their record up to 14-3. As for Mercer Island, their victory bumped their record up to 5-9.

Mercer Island suffered a grim 71-47 defeat to Lake Washington in their previous meeting back in December of 2024. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Lake Washington's Ashley Uusitalo, who went 10 of 17 on her way to 25 points along with six assists and six boards. Now that Mercer Island knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
