The New Year welcomed Smithfield-Selma with a 67-39 whooping from South Johnston. Smithfield-Selma has struggled against South Johnston recently, as their match on Wednesday was their third consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the loss, Smithfield-Selma still got an impressive performance from Jacob Stewart, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and six blocks. Stewart has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Gracen Watlington, who scored six points along with five rebounds.
Smithfield-Selma's loss was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 2-7. As for South Johnston, their victory ended a six-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 3-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Smithfield-Selma will challenge Hunt at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hunt presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Smithfield-Selma in North Carolina (Hunt is ranked 213th, while Smithfield-Selma is ranked 531st). As for South Johnston, they will head out on the road to face off against Fike at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
