Basketball Recap: Tombstone Piles Up the Points Against Valley Union

Tombstone came tearing into Monday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 37 points) and they left with even more momentum. They took their game with ease, bagging a 44-17 win over the Valley Union Blue Devils. The Yellow Jackets have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 14 contests by 26 points or more this season.

Tombstone had a senior duo take command as Rachel Thursby went 8 for 18 on her way to 19 points and four steals and Briella Schuller dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds. Thursby's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Ed'Jerrica Spencer, who posted four points and seven boards.

Several Blue Devils players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Giovanna Curiel, who earned five points and ten rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Curiel a new career-high in assists (two). Lexi Boss was another key player, putting up a point and 37 boards.

Tombstone is on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 13 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 22-5 record this season. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 27.5 points per game. As for Valley Union, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-14.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Tombstone will challenge St. Augustine Catholic at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The timing isn't great for St. Augustine Catholic: they have been struggling with three straight losses at home, while Tombstone has snatched up three consecutive wins on the road. As for Valley Union, they will square off against Duncan at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Duncan's defense has only allowed 23.8 points per game this season, so Valley Union's offense will have their work cut out for them.
