It was a good run, but the Aptos Mariners unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell 43-36 to Santa Cruz. While losing is never fun, Aptos can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 291st, while Santa Cruz is ranked 126th).
When it comes to explaining why Aptos lost, one person who can't be blamed is Mateo Calfe. Despite the final result, he scored 17 points along with five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Johnny Cornejo, who scored seven points.
Aptos' loss dropped their record down to 18-8. As for Santa Cruz, they have been performing well recently as they've won 16 of their last 19 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 21-5 record this season.
Aptos does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Santa Cruz also has no future games currently scheduled.
