It was a good run, but the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles unfortunately witnessed the end of their six-game winning streak on Friday. They opened the new year with a less-than-successful 56-50 defeat to they. They were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Valor Christian apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2023.
When it comes to explaining why Mountain Vista lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jacob Hoefs. Despite the final result, he scored 17 points along with eight assists and six rebounds. That's the first time this season that Hoefs posted eight or more assists. Another player making a difference was Cal Baskind, who scored ten points.
Mountain Vista struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Leading Valor Christian to victory were Brady Wynja and Cole Scherer. Wynja dropped a double-double on 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Scherer scored 16 points along with seven rebounds. The contest was Scherer's tenth in a row with at least ten points. Ryan Dixon was another key contributor, scoring ten points.
Mountain Vista's loss dropped their record down to 8-2. As for Valor Christian, they pushed their record up to 9-1 with that victory, which was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mountain Vista will take on Arapahoe at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Arapahoe will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings (they are ranked 51st, while Mountain Vista is ranked fifth). As for Valor Christian, they will head out on the road to face off against Smoky Hill at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. One thing working in Smoky Hill's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season.
