The Sandia Prep Sundevils's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their fourth straight loss. Their rough 57-33 loss to Penasco might stick with them for a while.
When it comes to explaining why Sandia Prep lost, one person who can't be blamed is Emily Cook. Despite the final result, she scored 11 points. Cook scored a full 33.3% of Sandia Prep's points, the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Penasco's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Rochelle Lopez, who scored 14 points along with seven assists. The contest was Lopez's ninth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Charnelle Gonzales, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Sandia Prep's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 3-5. As for Penasco, their win bumped their record up to 6-3.
Sandia Prep's road trip will continue as they head out to face Pecos at 1:30 p.m. on December 29, 2023. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Mexico (Pecos is ranked 71st, while Sandia Prep is ranked 95th). Penasco won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Los Alamos at 3:00 p.m. on December 29, 2023. Hopefully Los Alamos focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Thursday.
