COLUMBIA, S.C. -
Lower Richland (Hopkins, S.C.) saw its 14-point lead dwindle to eight, but still managed to hang on and defeat
Richland Northeast (Columbia, S.C.) 14-6 on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run by
Heath Gilmore in the second quarter, the Diamond Hornets were up 7-0 at the half.
Lower Richland expanded its lead to 14 points entering the fourth quarter. LR's lone score in the quarter came on a touchdown pass by Gilmore to
Larry Collins.
Richland Northeast's lone touchdown came on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which the Cavaliers took, 30-0.
The win was a nice bounce back for the Hopkins school, which lost to Orangeburg-Wilkinson last week, 14-2. The loss was the third in a row for Richland Northeast.
In a non-conference game next week Richland Northeast (0-3) takes on Aiken, and Lower Richland (2-2) will go up against Airport also in a non-conference game.
