The Valley View Cougars will head out to challenge the West Scranton Invaders at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Valley View is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.1 runs per game this season.
If Valley View beats West Scranton with 16 runs on Monday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two matches with that exact score. The Cougars blew past Scranton Prep 16-1 on Friday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cougars.
Taylor Cawley made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one run.
In other batting news, Kalli Karwowski was incredible, firing off two home runs and five RBI while going 3-for-3. Zoie Krupovich was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, two RBI, and one double.
Valley View always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .808. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Scranton Prep only posted an OBP of .182.
Meanwhile, West Scranton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They lost 17-0 to Abington Heights.
Valley View pushed their record up to 13-2-1 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average over those games. As for West Scranton, their loss dropped their record down to 4-12.
West Scranton's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Valley View has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .520. It's a different story for West Scranton, though, as they've only averaged .338. Will they be able to contain Valley View's hitters?
Valley View took their victory against West Scranton when the teams last played back in April by a conclusive 15-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
