Derrick Favors of South Atlanta High School finally closed the book on his high school career with a trio of significant honors and events.
On April 8, Favors earned MaxPreps National Player of the Year honors after averaging 28.1 points and 13.3 rebounds per game and leading South Atlanta to a 29-3 record.
A week later, the 6-foot-9 forward made his pledge to Georgia Tech official by signing his letter of intent.
Finally, Favors played his last game before moving on to the next level Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in the Jordan Brand Classic. Fittingly, he turned in a MVP effort by scoring 21 points and leading his all-star squad to victory.
As Favors heads to Georgia Tech he has already left his mark on the city of Atlanta. He racked up 2,341 points, 1,151 rebounds and 741 blocks in his high school career. He set school records in all three categories.
Baseball: Kell tops Walton in Turner Field treat
The Kell Longhorns and Walton Raiders met for a region 6-AAAAA baseball game at Turner Field, the home of the Atlanta Braves last weekend. The game lived up to the venue.
In the end the No. 7 Longhorns (15-3, 9-2) pulled out a 3-2 win over Walton (10-10, 5-7).
"At a high-school ballgame you might get a couple hundred people, unless it's a playoff game," Kell head coach Donnie English told the Marietta Daily Journal. "What you see out here today is all these people. It's not only exciting for us, but for the school and the faculty and the administration. We had coaches that we just as excited as kids to be down here, so it was just nice for everybody."
