After flying high against the Jefferson Silver Foxes last Friday, the Canutillo Eagles came back down to earth. Canutillo fell just short of El Paso by a score of 38-36. The match was a 10-10 toss-up at halftime, but Canutillo couldn't quite close it out.
Canutillo's loss on Tuesday came despite strong showings from Rebekah Perez and Mikira Wilkes. Perez almost dropped a double-double on 16 points and nine rebounds, while Wilkes scored 12 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Perez hasn't dropped below nine rebounds for three straight games.
Leading El Paso to victory were Abby Aragon and Natalia Thomas. Aragon scored 14 points along with two steals, while Thomas scored 11 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Aragon has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Guevara, who scored seven points along with four steals.
Canutillo's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 18-11. As for El Paso, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 22-9 record this season.
Canutillo will head out on the road to face off against Hanks at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hanks will roll in looking for their 17th straight victory, something Canutillo surely won't give up without a fight. El Paso will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Chapin at 6:00 p.m. on February 9th. Hopefully Chapin focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Tuesday.
