Naugatuck Valley - Brass recap Sept. 26, 2012
Derby's Matt Nicolari rumbled for the longest rushing play in Naugatuck Valley - Brass this season in his game against Naugatuck last week. Nicolari's team beat the Greyhounds as he sprinted for 90 yards on the play and finished with 113 in all.
Seymour moved up to 76 from 106 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 57-12 win over Sacred Heart helped the Wildcats improve their standing.
Ansonia's dynamic duo of JaiQuan McKnight and Andrew Matos proved tough for Woodland Regional to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. McKnight threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns and Matos had 174 yards receiving. Tyler Lester helped Ansonia's passing attack out by catching one ball for 20 yards.
Jacob Thomas was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 19 carries, he ran for 170 yards as Wilby beat the Hawks.
Mike Nicol provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Wolcott bested Torrington. He completed eight passes for 82 yards and also ran for 160 yards. Nicol's favorite target this week was Tyler Prescott, who caught three passes for 42 yards.
Ansonia's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Chargers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. McKnight has thrown for 356 yards and five touchdowns this season, while Matos has nine catches for 322 yards. Arkeel Newsome leads the league in rushing with 361 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Ansonia takes on Derby. Thomas Brockett's team is in fourth place, while George French's team is in third place.
The Chargers were the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fourth in the league. Ansonia vanquished Woodland Regional 47-16 earlier in the week.
