Avery Layton was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and six unearned) runs off ten hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Brielle Layton made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Allie Elliott was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, Tri-Central hadn't done well against Eastern recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Trojans sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 win over the Comets. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Trojans have posted against the Comets since May 2, 2017.
Like Rossville, Tri-Central also got a great game from a two-way player: Layla Baldwin. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits (and only one walk). Baldwin was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Logan Creason, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and one double. Those two hits gave her a new career-high.
Tri-Central has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-9 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.0 runs over those games. As for Rossville, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-4.
Tri-Central's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Rossville has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 11.9 hits per game. It's a different story for Tri-Central, though, as they've been averaging 11.9 hits. Given Rossville's sizable advantage in that area, the Trojans will need to find a way to close that gap.
Rossville took their victory against Tri-Central in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 18-0 score. Will the Hornets repeat their success, or do the Trojans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
