The Arroyo Valley Hawks will host the Santa Paula Cardinals at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Arroyo Valley is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 34.8 points per game this season.
Arroyo Valley is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 26-24 win over Desert Christian Academy. The victory was familiar territory for the Hawks, who have now won four games in a row.
Arroyo Valley had a senior duo take command as Joseph Stanley gained 236 total yards and two touchdowns and Jerome Weaver rushed for 104 yards and one score on only 11 carries. Stanley's rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his fourth straight game with at least 102 rushing yards.
Arroyo Valley was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 325 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 177 rushing yards in ten consecutive contests.
One reason for the win was Arroyo Valley's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Stanley, Jaime Verdin, and Angel Llamas, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Meanwhile, Santa Paula made easy work of Ocean View on Friday and carried off a 27-7 win. The Cardinals might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by 20 points or more this season.
Arroyo Valley better focus on containing Ryan Luna and Rene Vega as the pair were huge in Santa Paula's win. Luna rushed for 105 yards on only 14 carries, while Vega threw for 138 yards while completing 76.5% of his passes. That's the most rushing yards Luna has posted since back in August.
Santa Paula didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Aiden Ramirez and Dominick Alcantar.
Santa Paula now has a winning record of 6-5. As for Arroyo Valley, their record now sits at 9-2.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Arroyo Valley has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 304.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Santa Paula struggles in that department as they've been averaging 185.2 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
