Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.) came into Saturday's contest ranked No. 17 in California, but was stunned by
St. Augustine (San Diego, Calif.), 19-7. St. Augustine was ranked at No. 105 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for California coming into the week.
After taking the lead on a touchdown pass by
Joe Joe Hudson to
Tariq Thompson in the second quarter, the Saints were up 13-7 at the half.
St. Augustine expanded its lead to 12 points entering the fourth quarter. SA scored once in the quarter on a touchdown run by
Elijah Preston.
The loss snapped Cathedral Catholic's four-game winning streak.
Cathedral Catholic's lone touchdown came on a 3-yard run by
Chris Moliga in the second quarter.
Coming into the game the Saints had allowed 18.0 points per game this year. St. Augustine held firm on the defensive front, and kept the Dons well below the 21.4 points it had been averaging per game.
The defeat comes as a step back for Cathedral Catholic, which notched a 38-0 victory over Lincoln in its previous outing. With the win SA extended its winning streak to three games.
Cathedral Catholic (6-2) will play a Eastern game against Mira Mesa next week, while St. Augustine (6-2) will take on Scripps Ranch also in a Eastern game.
