The Laguna Creek Cardinals pushed their score all the way to 67 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They were the victim of a tough 90-67 defeat at the hands of Modesto Christian. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their last game last Saturday (59), Laguna Creek still had to take the loss.
Laguna Creek lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Sonai Murphy, who scored 17 points along with two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Murphy has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kj Ramey, who scored 19 points.
Gavin Sykes had a dynamite game for Modesto Christian, scoring 31 points along with five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Rashod Cotton, who scored 21 points along with five rebounds and two blocks.
Laguna Creek's defeat dropped their record down to 9-6. As for Modesto Christian, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Laguna Creek will square off against Burbank at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Burbank focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 11 on Wednesday. Modesto Christian won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Tokay at 7:30 p.m. on January 3rd. Tokay knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven matchups -- so hopefully Modesto Christian likes a good challenge.
