Belfry and Martin County are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Belfry Pirates will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on the Martin County Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.
If Belfry beats Martin County with 14 runs on Thursday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two games with that exact score. Belfry's pitchers stepped up to hand Betsy Layne a 14-0 shutout on Tuesday.
Chase Varney made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Varney was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other pitching news, Eli Jones looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on David Michael Hagy, who scored three runs while going 3-for-5. Steven Vipperman was another key player, going 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Belfry was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .436. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, Martin County had to kick off their season on the road on Tuesday, but they showed no ill effects. Everything went their way against Phelps as Martin County made off with a 19-3 win. The Cardinals haven't had any issues with the Hornets recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Like Belfry, Martin County also got a great game from a two-way player: Dylan Hale. On the mound, he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, Hale gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one stolen base. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in RBI.
In other batting news, Crayson Lafferty was a standout: he scored four runs while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Damian Cheek, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and one triple.
Belfry beat Martin County 6-2 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Will Belfry repeat their success, or does Martin County have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
