Columbus waltzed into their match on Friday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They came out on top against the Varela Vipers by a score of 5-2. The Explorers have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Vipers, too.
Columbus got a great performance from Mathew Rios as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over 6.2 innings pitched. Rios has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Jason Garcia, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Maximus Alvarez, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Columbus hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Varela struck out eight times.
