The Shaw Cardinals can finally bid farewell to their five-game losing streak thanks to their game on Tuesday. They managed a 34-29 victory over Rhodes. The win was just what Shaw needed coming off of a 64-8 defeat in their prior match.
Shaw's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kyra Smith-Goard, who scored 11 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which Smith-Goard has scored at least 25% of Shaw's points. Another player making a difference was Serenity Kent-cox, who scored 11 points.
Despite the defeat, Rhodes had strong showings from Betsaida Byrd, who scored seven points along with eight rebounds and six blocks, and Daniya King, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds. The contest was King's fourth in a row with at least ten points.
Shaw's victory bumped their record up to 2-8. As for Rhodes, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-3.
Shaw will head out on the road to face off against Maple Heights at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Rhodes, they will be playing at home against John Marshall at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams have allowed few points on average, (John Marshall: 29.5, Rhodes: 26.8) so any points scored will be well earned.
