Baseball Recap: St. Mary's Has No Trouble Against Florence

St. Mary won the last time they faced Florence and things went their way on Saturday too. The Pirates put the hurt on the Huskies with a sharp 16-5 victory. The result was nothing new for the Pirates, who have now won six games by ten runs or more so far this season.

Bret Stewart was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Stewart was even better at the plate, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged two or more in each of the last four games he's played.

In other batting news, St. Mary's let Ron Karin and Ryan Strub run wild. Karin got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and two RBI, while Strub got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most runs Karin has posted over his last 11 matchups. Isaac Velazquez was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

St. Mary's always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .618. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

St. Mary's has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Florence, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-12.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Mary's will face off against Limon at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Florence, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Alamosa at 3:00 p.m. on the 13th.
