The Medina Mustangs's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss. They took a 53-44 hit to the loss column at the hands of Akron. Medina has struggled against Akron recently, as their match on Friday was their third consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the defeat, Medina saw an underclassman step up: Jerrell Nealy dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. Nealy scored a full 38.6% of Medina's points, the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Christian Moss, who scored six points along with 11 rebounds.
Akron found their leader in underclassman Benjamin Gerstung, who scored 25 points along with seven rebounds. That's the first time this season that Gerstung scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Trace Hill, who scored nine points along with five steals.
Medina's loss dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Akron, their victory bumped their record up to 3-1.
Medina will head out on the road to face off against Newfane at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Newfane is coming into the match hot, having won their last seven games. As for Akron, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Royalton-Hartland at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Royalton-Hartland is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
