It's playoff time, and Basic had no trouble coming through when it counted. Everything went their way against the Foothill Falcons on Friday as they made off with a 12-2 victory. Considering the Wolves have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Melanie Hughes was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three runs and one double.
In other batting news, Isabella Christensen and Mia Frias did most of the damage at the plate: Christensen went 4-for-5 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles, while Frias went 2-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI Frias has posted since back in March. Samantha Marquez was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Basic kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. They are 11-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Basic is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-12 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. As for Foothill, with the defeat, they broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 14-12-1.
Coming up, Basic will take on Doral Academy Red Rock at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Wolves' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Dragons have averaged an impressive 7.8 runs per game this season. Foothill does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
