The Animas Panthers will head out on the road to face off against the Roy/Mosquero Longhorn at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Friday, Animas faced Elida in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Animas managed a 43-38 win over Elida.
Kohan Evans was on fire: he rushed for 152 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 7.6 yards per carry, and also threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Evans was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 50 yards. Tallon Marble was in the mix too, providing Animas with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Roy/Mosquero put another one in the bag on Thursday to keep their perfect season alive. They didn't even let New Mexico School for the Deaf onto the board and left with a 50-0 victory. The result was nothing new for Roy/Mosquero, who have now won eight matchups by 32 points or more so far this season.
Roy/Mosquero can attribute much of their success to Brycen Barnes , who rushed for 93 yards and three touchdowns on only five carries, and Rhett Smith, who rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries. Barnes is on a roll when it comes to rushing touchdowns, as he's now punched in two or more in the last three games he's played.
Animas' victory bumped their record up to 3-5. As for Roy/Mosquero, their win was their ninth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 9-0.
Keep an eye on the end zone in Saturday's game as the two teams haven't had much trouble getting there this season. Animas commands a daunting offense this season, having averaged 5 touchdowns per game. However, it's not like Roy/Mosquero struggles in that department as they've been even better at 8.1 per game. With these two high-octane teams facing off on Saturday, fans should be in for an exciting offensive matchup.
Animas was dealt a bruising 48-12 defeat at the hands of Roy/Mosquero when the teams last played back in September. Can Animas avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
