Basketball Recap: Charleston Math & Science Falls Despite Big Games from Zion King and Ben Gilliard

Charleston Math & Science lost against Baptist Hill back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The matchup between the Charleston Math & Science Riptide and the Baptist Hill Bobcats didn't end well, with the Charleston Math & Science Riptide falling 69-53. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Riptide came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 93rd, while the Bobcats are ranked 203rd).

Ben Gilliard and Zion King certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Gilliard almost dropped a double-double on 27 points and nine rebounds, while King posted 14 points in addition to five assists and four steals. King is crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Charlie Hider, who had four points and seven boards.

Baptist Hill's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jaden Douglas led the charge by dropping a double-double on 24 points and 27 rebounds. Those 24 points gave Douglas a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Martrell Wright, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds.

Charleston Math & Science's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-3. As for Baptist Hill, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-9 record this season.

Charleston Math & Science will welcome Scott's Branch at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Charleston Math & Science is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 61.3 points per game this season. As for Baptist Hill, they will challenge Cross at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Baptist Hill will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
