After a string of eight wins, the Cesar Chavez Champions's good fortune finally ran out on Thursday. They fell to Cibola 54-49. Cesar Chavez was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Cibola apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.
When it comes to explaining why Cesar Chavez lost, one person who can't be blamed is Sophia Doromal. Despite the final result, she went 6 for 10 from beyond the arc en route to 24 points and 0 assists. Doromal is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Lakeisha Robinson was another key contributor, scoring six points along with six rebounds.
Cibola's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Avianna Salcedo, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 13 rebounds. Salcedo set a new season high mark in steals with three. The team also got some help courtesy of Isabela Molina, who scored ten points along with five steals.
Cesar Chavez's loss dropped their record down to 8-1. As for Cibola, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-3.
Cesar Chavez will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Maricopa at 6:00 p.m. on January 8, 2024. Cibola will take on Denver East in a holiday battle at 12:00 p.m. on Monday at. Denver East comes in on a streak of failing to score more than zero points in their last four games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse.
