The Calhan Bulldogs will square off against the Simla Cubs at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
As a matter of fact, Calhan put up the most runs they have all season on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Ellicott 17-16. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Bulldogs have posted since March 25th.
The team relied heavily on Liam Metzger, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and four runs. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Toby Monger, who went a perfect 5-for-5 with three RBI and one run.
Calhan always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .622. They are undefeated (1-0) when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Simla waltzed into their contest on Thursday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They were the clear victors by a 15-6 margin over the Bulldogs. The result was nothing new for the Cubs, who have now won nine games by eight runs or more so far this season.
Wyatt Stanko made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in nine consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with four runs and two stolen bases. He is becoming a predictor of Simla's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-4 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, Simla let T.J. Eurich and Treven Kocerha run wild. Eurich went 3-for-4 with five stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI, while Kocerha went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Simla is undefeated when Eurich posts two or more runs, but 2-4 otherwise. Ethan Kissam was another key player, going 2-for-5 with two runs and one stolen base.
Simla pushed their record up to 10-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Calhan, their win ended a 15-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 3-10-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Calhan has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Simla struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Calhan suffered a grim 15-0 defeat to Simla when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Will the Bulldogs have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other baseball content.
