Basketball Recap: Somerset Academy Losee Takes Down Ranked Mater Academy East Las Vegas

On Monday, Somerset Academy Losee faced Mater Academy East Las Vegas in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Somerset Academy Losee Lions had just enough and edged the Mater Academy East Las Vegas Knights out 61-58. The win was familiar territory for the Lions who have now won three matchups in a row.

Somerset Academy Losee's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jayla Lewis led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 15 points and nine assists. What's more, Lewis also racked up seven boards, the most she's had since back in January of 2024. Tia Cleveland was another key player, dropping a double-double on 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Lewis wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Somerset Academy Losee was working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mater Academy East Las Vegas only racked up nine assists.

When it comes to explaining why Mater Academy East Las Vegas lost, don't look at Amija Macon. Despite the final result, she went 10 of 22 on her way to 28 points and eight boards. Macon's morning made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sarai Bautista, who went 5 of 12 on her way to 13 points and eight rebounds.

Somerset Academy Losee's victory bumped their record up to 7-3. As for Mater Academy East Las Vegas, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-5.

Somerset Academy Losee wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 57-36 win against Desert Oasis on the 30th. As for Mater Academy East Las Vegas, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 46-39 victory against Basic on the 30th.
