The Santa Rita Eagles's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They had to suffer through a rough 57-19 loss at the hands of Willcox. Santa Rita has struggled against Willcox recently, as their matchup on Thursday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
Willcox was led to victory by Maddie Bennett and Mia Mungarro. Bennett dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 rebounds, while Mungarro scored 21 points along with five steals. Mungarro continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Layla Donahue, who scored five points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Santa Rita's loss was their 14th straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 1-13. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 23.4 points per game. As for Willcox, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 8-11.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Santa Rita the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome Benson at 5:30 p.m. on January 16th. Benson presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Santa Rita in Arizona (Benson is ranked 117th, while Santa Rita is ranked 273rd). As for Willcox, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Morenci at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Morenci focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Friday.
