The Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fifth straight loss. The matchup between them and St. Mary wasn't particularly close, with Archbishop Spalding falling 75-60. While losing is never fun, Archbishop Spalding can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 65th, while the Saints are ranked 17th).
Several Cavaliers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Whitley Watkins, who scored 21 points along with six rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Watkins has scored all season. Danniella Sebastian was another key contributor, scoring 15 points.
It was another big night for Bailey Harris, who almost dropped a double-double on 31 points and nine rebounds for St. Mary's. Harris is on a roll when it comes to points, as she's now scored 15 or more in the last 13 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Alexandra Vandiver, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 16 rebounds.
Archbishop Spalding has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-11 record this season. As for St. Mary's, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 14 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-7 record this season.
Archbishop Spalding won't have much time to rest: their next game is against the at 2:00 p.m. on February 3rd. Western is coming into the match hot, having won their last 12 games. As for St. Mary's, they will head out on the road to face off against the Panthers at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully St. Frances Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Saturday.
