Buena dropped to 12-6 on Wednesday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They fell just short of the Wildwood Warriors by a score of 9-7. That's two games in a row now that the Chiefs have lost by exactly two runs.
Jaevon Alexander was huge no matter where he played even without the win. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in earned runs (zero). He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
In other batting news, Aden Vai was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Richie Wilson, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
As for Wildwood, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 11-5. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games.
On Wildwood's side, the team relied heavily on Trevor Troiano, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two doubles. Troiano is becoming a predictor of the Warriors' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 2-5 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Gianni Troiano, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Looking ahead, Buena is taking a road trip to face off against Egg Harbor Township at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Wildwood, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Lower Cape May at 4:00 p.m.
